Linares

Yesterday I drove through the small town of Linares, off Ruta 5 (the Pan-American Highway) in Chile - it was almost completely destroyed by the earthquake but what astonished me is how quickly and efficiently the Chileans are cleaning up and getting on with rebuilding. I don't think I have ever admired a country or its people this much.

  2. Hi There!

I've read and loved both of your books, and have also spent a stint in South Africa myself. I'll be having an opportunity to go back in a little over a year, and was considering trying my hand at becoming a field guide.

I was wondering if you would recommend any of the field guide training companies (or recommending ones to avoid), as well as any tips for an aspiring guide.

    Thanks!

  3. Hello and sorry for my slow reply here,

Firstly to Shan, I am having a great time (though altitude sickness feels like someone shoved a spoon up my nose and gave my brains a violent stir) and will have some South American stories out next year.

    To Arcuras,

I can recommend Wild Guides in Botswana and Eco Training in South Africa as two good spots that will not only train you but help with job placement afterward.
As for guiding advice... surely I am the worst person to ask? But, any success I did have was probably due to remembering that while each day in the bush for me was familiar, for the tourists I led it was sometimes the trip of a lifetime. When you are guiding it is impossible to remember every person you lead, but they will have memories of you forever. It is up to you how those are perceived.

Best of luck, it is a great life!
